With more than 80 public schools and a host of private schools as well, education on the primary and secondary levels is an important part of the fabric that makes up Oakland. The city is known for its dedication to educating its youth and boasts such ancillary educational facilities as the Chabot Space & Science Center, which is affiliated with the Smithsonian; The Children’s Hospital of Oakland Research Institute; and the Oakland Zoo.

The city of Oakland has also created specialized educational programs that include the Oakland Military Institute and the Oakland School for the Arts.

When it comes to higher education, Oakland is perfectly situated for its residents to take advantage of a number of different institutes of higher learning. Colleges and universities here include the University of California-Berkeley, California State University-Hayward, Mills College, Holy Names College and the California College of the Arts.
